Description
Culture & Lifestyle
• Once regarded as an Afrikaners’ Shrine, symbol of apartheid.
• It reflected the desired of the white settlers strife for independence.
• Showed the hardship they endured to explore the interior for a better life.
• The resulting conflicts and exploitation with indigenous people is a lesson to be avoided.
• Dingane’s treachery deed was his only option to repel the trekker’s invasion.
• British ignored the Sand River Convention (1852) to annexe ZAR for their mineral wealth.
• It eventually led to the Independence War (1880 – 1881) in which the British suffer the humiliation of the
ONLY DEFEAT of any war at that era.
• The desire of “revenge” contributed partly towards the South African War (1899 – 1902) from which some
Boers still resent the British till today.
